Entering the Dialogue Arena
“Vrischikasya
visham pucham
Makshikaya
visham sira:
Thakshakasya
visham dantam
Sarvangam
durjanasya cha.”

For a scorpion
the poison is on its tail. A fly carries it on its head. For a snake, the
dangerous weapon is its teeth, whereas wicked people carry poison in every part
of their body. We don’t know with which weapon they are going to fight.

The meaning of
the above Sanskrit Sloka becomes lucid when we study the behavioral pattern of
some of the world leaders, who foster the theory of war, hatred and
destruction. They rejoice at the fall of the ‘other’. They will use any kind of
weapon for the same.

It was in this
background that a news that came from Vienna became a matter of joy. So far it
was the Vatican, the World Council of Churches and some other religious
councils who pleaded for inter-religious dialogue and harmony. They have been
in the field since the Second Vatican Council of 1962. Now some nations have
entered the scene. A Centre for Dialogue was formed in Vienna under the
auspices of the Saudi Government, with the support of Austria and Spain. The
Vatican also extended full support. It was named as King Abdullah International
Centre for Interfaith and Inter-cultural Dialogue (KAICIID).

It is envisaged
as an inter-governmental organization to promote the use of dialogue globally
to prevent and resolve conflict and to enhance understanding and cooperation.
It took seven years to plan and establish this Centre in a neutral country, for
fostering long lasting relationship among people of different religions and
cultures.

All the
renowned dialogue practitioners from around the world were invited for the
inauguration in Vienna. Political leaders, diplomats and others from academic
circles also attended. Jose Nandhikkara Achen from Dharmaram College, Bangalore
and myself were the participants from South India. A few of our global leaders
of United Religions Initiative also attended, under the leadership of our
Ambassador Mussie Hailu of Ethiopia.

KAICIID
organizes a number of dialogue programs around the world today. They offer
online courses also. The year- long fellowship program is one of the most
attractive projects sponsored by the Centre. They join hands with United
Nations also to undertake important programs.

It is a
committee with prominent leaders from different countries that steer the
activities of the Vienna Centre. It is heartening to see Austria extending all
support, as that is a nation which has seen massive brutalities during two
world wars.

KAICIID is in
the forefront of inter-faith dialogue today bringing religious leaders and
political decision makers together for developing and implementing conflict
resolution initiatives. They support experts, trainers and organizations
working in this area through capacity building programs, workshops, training and
partnerships.
